Food is what makes you.

What we put into our body, or “our diet”, is one of the most important ways to take care of our body and soul.

At Mogami, we focus on the below diet principles rooted in the traditional Japanese diet.

This new blog series aims to help introduce a selection of traditional Japanese home-cooked recipes that can inspire your daily nourishment for your body.

Being among the top longevity nations, Japanese recipes will help provide you with a delicious and nutritious meal through an emphasis on fresh, balanced, seasonal and varied ingredients.

Traditional Japanese recipe: Shaké (Salmon) onigiri

Shake Onigiri is a simple treat that’s quick to make and perfect for busy days. It is also ideal for picnics or hanami, the Japanese tradition of sakura viewing. Its convenience makes it a popular choice, perfect for grabbing on the go or a picnic on a sunny day.

Ingredients (2 servings)

  • Cooked rice: 350g

  • Salmon flakes: 30g

  • Green onions (finely chopped): 30g

  • Soy sauce: 1 tablespoon

  • Sesame oil: 1 tablespoon

  • Optional:  seaweed, sesame seeds

Directions

  • In a bowl, combine the cooked rice, soy sauce, and sesame oil until evenly mixed.

  • Add the salmon flakes and chopped green onions, optional ingredients and thoroughly mix everything together.

  • Divide the mixture into 4 portions.

  • Take each portion and wrap it in plastic wrap, shaping it into a triangle.

  • Unwrap the onigiri, place on a plate, and serve.

Tips

  • Adjust seasoning to taste

  • Use warm, freshly cooked Japanese short-grain rice

  • Shape each onigiri with love

  • Wrap individually in plastic or nori seaweed for portability

  • Add extra protein or incorporate some Japanese fermented sides such as takuan for some extra gut health

How does this nourish you?

Embracing the Palette

Shake onigiri's vibrant array of colours, combining salmon, rice, and various seasonings, enriches your diet with a spectrum of nutrients, from omega-3 fatty acids to essential vitamins and minerals.

Intentional Eating

Crafted with care and presented with flair, the Shake onigiri invites you to savour each bite mindfully, fostering a deeper connection with your

food and promoting better digestion and satisfaction.

Nutritional Harmony

With its harmonious blend of salmon, rice, and vegetables, this onigiri offers a balanced medley of proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, providing sustained energy, supporting

muscle function, and contributing to overall well-being. We recommend additional dishes of miso soup (an ingredient great for your gut health) and protein sides (teriyaki chicken drumsticks are a classic) to add some additional nutritional balance to this dish.
